I use a MOTU 828x for additional inputs to an Apollo via ADAT. And during the promo, you will get a TB Satellite Quad from UA for free. You will also get the latest generation converters available from UA. But it gives you two Hi Z Unison inputs with up to 4 Unison mic pres and 4 line level inputs. It will be $600 more expensive than a Twin Quad. The second bank is there for S/MUX only.Īlternatively, consider a new Apollo 8 Duo. So you could not add another external interface to the second bank of ADAT on the Apollo. You need to also know that even though Apollos have two banks of ADAT in and out, Apollo can only accept a maximum of 8 channels in and out through ADAT. So with a Quad SF and your 828x, you will have 16 inputs and 16 outputs. While the new Twin has better converters and a Unison Hi Z input, the SF Quad has 4 Unison mic preamps and four extra line level inputs. It would be able to accept 8 ADAT input and output channels at 96khz. It has two banks of ADAT inputs and outputs, like your 828X. Even expanded with an outboard ADAT interface it can provide a Twin can only provide maximum of ten inputs and four outputs.Ī used Apollo Quad with a TB card installed would run about the same as a new Twin Quad. But this is line level stuff, no preamps. So 6 channels in and out 96k with the addon boards. If you need outs for surround, there are addon boards for 4 channels as well. There is only one ADAT if to extend more, and that is 8 channels 44/48 or 4 channels more 96k. RME AIO with addon board 4 inputs - if that is enough. If looking for reliable stuff, assuming you run 96k then - why not internal cards like RME stuff. So will USB 2 do the trick? Any suggestions please! I don’t use a huge amount of I/O - max 6-7 channels but have very high track counts largely of orchestral VSTs.

I make music for a living (for TV & Film) so need something very solid. My mobo can take Thunderbolt but is that OTT for my needs? USB2 has less bandwidth and I have pretty poor latency with the Focusrite Scarlett I have in the studio at home Worried Firewire is old tech and have had plenty of problems with older drivers, So I’m pondering going for a new interface but and perplexed by all the chatter about formats…

Much reading has suggested some issues with legacy firewire drivers for the MOTUs and the latest ones aren’t working at all. I bought a MOTU 828 MkII Firewire off a friend after hearing much about their reliability but have - after days of cursing and trying everything under the sun - can’t get it to work properly with Cubase or any other audio app. My beloved Tascam FW-1884 is coming to the end of it’s useful life and I’m trying to find the right replacement interface.
